Kyoto-based apparel brand MITTAN is dedicated to creating garments that are made to last—both in form and in spirit. Through practices such as mending, redyeing, and resale, they pursue their concept of “long-lasting clothing.” Drawing inspiration from historical garments and textiles from around the world, they propose a form of contemporary ethnic wear—clothing designed to transcend trends and endure over time.

This item is a hagire zabuton (patchwork cushion) made from leftover and scrap fabric.

The original fabric is woven on a vintage shuttle loom (shonher loom) using organic cotton waste spun into yarn via the traditional “gara-bou” method for the weft, and re-spun silk noil yarn—made from silk remnants not suitable for standard filament production—for the warp. The texture of the slubbed yarn combined with the slow weaving process results in a handwoven-like softness and richness. The distinctive mountain-shaped twill weave creates a subtle yet expressive structure.

The patchwork construction is done by individuals at Kobo Rashinban, a workshop in Toyonaka, Osaka. Each piece is freely machine-sewn without fixed patterns, making every cushion completely one-of-a-kind.

Final assembly is done entirely by hand by artisans at Takaokaya, a Kyoto-based cushion maker founded in 1919. The cotton filling is carefully inserted by hand, ensuring even distribution and firm support—comfortable even after long sitting, with gentle support for the pelvis and spine.

This is a classic Kyo-zabuton (Kyoto-style floor cushion).
